Philco Model 89B Baby Grand Cathedral Radio (1933/1934)
The Philco 89 Baby Grand (89B) made its debut in
January of 1933, together with its sister model the 19B. Its
introductory price was $30 in the East ($32.50 in the
West), though by November it was being sold for $37.50
($39.50). The 89B had no shadow meter but otherwise it
and the 19B were the same electrically. For a short while,
the 89B even used a very similar cabinet to the 19B, but
after a brief production run the style shown here was
adopted. It would be revised yet again for 1935 & 1936.
The 19B on the other hand remained in its original
cabinet through the 1934 season, after which it was
discontinued.
In June of 1933, as with the 19B, the 89B was upgraded
to cover the old police band, though unlike the 19B, it
retained just a two-point tone control. My model is this
updated version.
Price wise, the popular 89B took the number four spot on
Philco's list of Junior models, which as of December 1933
looked like:-
The 89B's 6-tube ac-powered superheterodyne chassis
covers the standard broadcast band from 550-1500kc
and the police band from 1.5-3.2mc. The tube line-up is
44 (RF amp), 36 (autodyne), 44 (IF), 75 (2nd detector/
VC/1st AF), 42 (AF power) and 80 (rectifier). For further
details, see my 19B page. The schematic for the 4-knob
code-123 chassis may be found here, courtesy of
NostalgiaAir. The earlier schematic is available here.
Note that in all instances in the ads to the right the 89B
depicted is the earlier 3-knob version, even after the
early summer once Philco had upgraded the set to the
4-knob dual-band version (as photographed above).
